If you live in Mexico, either part or full time, or plan to do so soon, it is good to get your Mexican driver’s license.

Government procedures are tiring and stressful, especially if you don’t speak the local language. Getting a Mexican driver’s license is not exempt from that burden.

In this guide, I will stick to the process and documents needed in Baja California Sur.
However, there are different documents and steps in the other States of Mexico.

Is this the first time you have filed for your driver’s license in Baja California Sur?

If this is the first time you are getting a Baja California Drivers’ License, you must first approve the mandatory driver’s test at the Municipal transit offices closest to your home, opening hours 08:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday.

In San José del Cabo it is located at Carretera Transpeninsular, km. 34.5 Col. Guaymitas, in front of Soriana supermarket.

In Cabo San Lucas it is located at Camino Viejo a San José, El Medano Ejidal, Marina, next to McDonalds.

What is the process?

Schedule an appointment at this link https://apps3.bcs.gob.mx/portal/publico?servicio=citas&tipo_servicio=agendar (if you skip scheduling, you can start the process, but you may have to wait in the line for several hours, I don’t recommend it.).

In San Jose del Cabo, the address is Blvd. Mauricio Castro crossing with 5 de mayo, Col. 8 de Octubre.

In Cabo San Lucas, the address is Plaza Tamaral, Blvd. Lázaro Cárdenas Col. Centro.

Show your appointment confirmation to the person at the door. This person will also check that you have all the required documents.

  • Official ID. It can be your passport or your permanent or temporal residency card.
  • Proof of address not older than three months. It can be water, power, telephone, cable, or house tax (predial) bill.
  • To be older than 18 years. Or older than 16 if you have your parent’s written consent.
  • Health certificate. It has to be issued by a public or private hospital, an assistance institution that provides free healthcare, or doctors duly registered in the state professional registry. It will certify that the applicant can drive vehicles.
  • Blood type. The doctor may include it in the health certificate, or you can bring a laboratory test result.

Once you have clearance from the door person, you will need to pay the driver’s license price in one of the windows inside the office. These are the current prices:

  • Public transport driver $1,978.00 pesos
  • Car driver $1,186.00 pesos
  • Motorcycle driver $964.00 pesos

Remember, you can get 50% off your driver’s license price if you are +60 years old and have an INAPAM Card. Click here to learn how to get it.

The last step is to smile for the camera!

They will take a photo of you and print your license card right away.

Done! You have your new driver’s license. It is valid for as long as you have it. If you lose it, you will need to repeat the process, skipping the Health Certificate and the driver’s test. Also, the replacement price is lower.
